In the past, whenever a friend/coworker/family member had a baby I would head to the baby section at Target and OH MY GOSH LOOK AT THAT LITTLE DRESS! pick out an adorable tiny person outfit. I am not alone in this. When I was pregnant and after C arrived everyone brought us tiny baby clothes. And why wouldn’t they- how fun to pick out little sparkly dresses and tiny plaid shirts and sweaters. What I didn’t realize pre-baby was how little use people would get from these things.
Not only did my daughter quickly outgrow most of the clothing we were given, but we didn’t have a lot of space to store it. My husband and I live in a small 1,000 sq ft apartment in Washington DC. Our daughter has a dresser and half a closet that she shares with our luggage, air mattress, and Christmas ornaments. Thanks to our current living situation we have come to believe in quality over quantity and that it is better to own a few things you love than a lot of things you kind of like.
With this in mind, I have put together a list of my top 7 baby shower gifts to give and receive. Most of these things were not on our baby registry. And to be completely honest, I was slightly frustrated when people didn’t shop off our registry. Then I used these things and fell in love. Now I buy them for my soon to be mommy friends despite their registry. Go figure.
1.
Bamboobies Yoga Nursing Brahhh– I don’t do yoga, but I have started Jillian Michaels 30 day Shred in an attempt to lose the baby weight. I’ve found this to be one of the most comfortable nursing bras that I’ve tried, and now wear it all the time. Seriously- it is fantastic.
2. Savor Keepsake Box– How did someone not come up with this idea sooner? It’s like a baby book, only better because you can save little mementos and keepsakes from your baby’s first years.

3. Kiinde– My husband is actually the one who first discovered the kiinde pumping set, and it has lived up to all of the hype. Now that I am back at work full time I am pumping at least 3 times a day. The fact that I don’t have to wash bottles each time is fantastic. The set comes with adapters so you can pump directly into the bags, then freeze or store in the fridge. When you need them, the bags fit into the plastic bottles and you snap on a nipple. How easy is that?! I’m in love. I know that a pumping kit doesn’t sound exciting to give as a gift, but I was pretty excited to receive it and even more so now that I have been using it for a few months.
4.
The Story of You Baby Book– I am one of those people that find great joy in putting together a memory book. I love how easy this baby book is to fill in. It prompts you with questions and space for each milestone. I started it when I was still pregnant, and now try to set aside an hour or so each month to update it. I’ve already forgotten so much of the first few months and love that this will serve as a reminder to my husband and I as well as something my daughter will have as she grows up.
5.
Happy Habitat Blanket– I received this pink, gold, and grey baby blanket at a shower having never heard of the company. I love the bright colors and imagine that my daughter will continue to use it long after she outgrows all things light pink. We use it as a stroller blanket and I often find myself grabbing it to use as a background in photos.
6.
Petunia Picklebottom Diaper Bag– I looked at a lot of diaper bags before deciding on this one. Most of my searches were for “cool diaper bags, modern diaper bags, diaper bags that don’t look like diaper bags, etc.” I like how clean and simple this is. The pockets that line the interior are also super helpful in finding things quickly.
7. Bamboobies Chic Nursing Shawl– I love this thing. I use it as a nursing shawl when I’m in public, as a carseat cover when we are out on walks or driving in the car, and as a cover when I am pumping at work. Multi purpose for the win.
